Now, south Mumbai residents can register online to get learner’s licence to drive a car. The new system, which is transparent and will eliminate the role of RTO touts and agents, will be launched by Tardeo RTO on February 24.
RTO officials have called driving school owners for an orientation programme on the online scheme on Saturday afternoon. They will be taken into confidence and we will ask them to promote the online system among new candidates seeking a driving licence.
While the online registrations for Tardeo RTO will be launched on the transport commissioner’s website on February 24, the first set of learner’s licences will be delivered after conducting the computerised test on March 3.

licebebnThis is the second RTO after Andheri to follow the e-method for learner’s licence.
At Tardeo, more than 300 applicants arrive for the learner’s licence daily. They will now benefit from the online process and there will be no more fleecing by touts.. The RTO will also have a manual system for those who are not comfortable with the online process. However, the total intake of applicants for the manual system will be not more than 50 per day while those coming through the online process will be 300 applicants daily. According to state transport commissioner V N More, the objective is to gradually make online process compulsory at all RTOs across Maharashtra. After Andheri and Tardeo RTOs, the next RTOs where the online process will soon commence are the Wadala, Thane, Vashi and Kalyan RTOs.
More said the online process is simple and anybody can log in from home or a cyber cafe. People will be asked to register all details online and also take printouts before arriving with the photos and original documents. It expedites the work and one just has to pay fees, get documents verified and appear for a computerised test before being given the learner’s licence.
Citizens are very happy with the new system while touts are upset.
The RTO Officials want to introduce technology to get rid of corruption in RTO work. For example, we are now setting up state-of-the-art driving test track which will have sensors and CCTVs to monitor your test. There will be no grace marks or people getting licence without driving a car properly. Those who fail the test will be asked to go for a 21-day refresher course.
