Mandira Bedi’s design label defines who she is
Mandira Bedi having recently launched own design label at Khar (West), Mumbai is riding high on the accolades she has been receiving. Mandira Bedi has done it all from acting in a very popular and critically acclaimed television soap to being a forefront speaker during cricket matches to films to now being a fashionista, this versatile celebrity has shined in all her roles. She has now stepped into the shoes of being a designer and has recently launched her label ‘Sarees by Mandira Bedi’.
Her collection boasts an assortment of simple, minimal yet blingy sarees for the contemporary Indian women. Known best for her famous noodles straps, Mandira indulges and experiments with hues and fabrics and brings out a striking companionship of the two. Her range of affordable and easy to wear sarees that have a traditional yet modern feel is what is most enthralling about her collection. She recently debuted at the Lakme Fashion Week SS 14 and also has an online e-commerce store.
The launch was a star studded event with Karan Johar as the guest of honour along with the big names of the film and fashion industry like Anil Kapoor, Arbaaz Khan, Maria Goretti with Arshad Warsi, Mini Mathur, Dr Jamuna Pai, Sophie Choudhary, Masaba, Shaheen and Roshan Abbas, Suchitra Pillai, Neelam and Sameer Soni, Madhoo, Neha Dhupia, Madhavan, Shonali Nagrani, Sanjay Suri among many others.
Mandira Bedi says her label of bespoke saris and accessories is an extension of who she is! “The ethos of the label is simple; every item of clothing designed by me is something I would wear myself” said Mandira. She adds, “There’s something here for everyone. A fusion of fabrics, colour and detail allows anyone from a teenager to a glam grand mum to carry off my designs!”
The fantastic response she’d received at exhibitions in Mumbai and Singapore ousted any apprehensions she had about launching her own label. She adds: “Being on a panel of experts and talking cricket had more perks than I had imagined! It got me to be associated with the most beautiful garment: The Sari.. The more I wore saris, the more I grew to love them. The sari is the most versatile garment ever. It can be formal, conservative, fun and sexy! And so to make my relationship with the sari even stronger, one day I walked into a fabric store and bought a few fabrics. I took them to a tailor and I told him what to do. And that’s just how it got going! As the days went by, I really started to enjoy colours and fabrics. My saris have never been about heavy work and lots of embroidery. I like to believe they radiate colour and drama. They are effective and affordable! I hope they please your eyes as much as they please mine!”
