A major Ganpati fascination spot, Kurla’s Sheetal Talao, was spotted by a baby crocodile by the nearby residing people. Sheetal Talao is a natural lake, which is rushed by huge crowd during the Ganpati festival for the immersion of idols. The lake spreads over one acre and is 35-ft deep. It is surrounded by chawls, shanties and hundreds of single storey buildings

baby-crocodiles-09The news of a crocodile in the lake has shocked the animal activists and the Forest Department officials. The people somehow captured the picture of the baby crocodile when it was on edge but the officials from Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) found none. Investigation is going on whether the hatchlings have been dumped into the lake. This news has created a havoc and panicky situation in the areas surrounding the lake.

“The hatchlings, if found, will be sent to the Tulsi Lake, which has a sizeable population of crocodiles. While an initial survey was conducted by the RAWW volunteers, we will get experts to search the lake”, said the Chief conservator of forests and field director, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mr. Sunil Limaye.

Sandeep Hutgi, who resides in Kausar Manzil close to the lake, said he spotted a hatchling around a week ago, and provided the authorities with a picture. The one we saw was barely a foot long. The pictures have been forwarded to the ward official, and we have been told they will put up halogen lights and search the lake.

SWEDENActivist Anil Galgali, residing in Kurla said’ “that it would surely take some time to find the hatchlings as the lake is very large, it is double the size of Bandra Talao. We need to investigate whether the lake is being used to illegally breed crocodiles.

The Assistant Municipal Commissioner Harshad Kale has requested to keep some patience, “We can’t confirm the presence of baby crocodiles in the lake. But the Forest Department is looking into the complaints, and we can only wait for their verdict”.
